Nicola Byrne’s hugely popular Phonics Planning book turned the Government's Letters and Sounds document into a detailed, manageable set of day-by-day phonics lesson plans.
Several years on Nicola has reviewed and improved this resource based on what she has observed while teaching from it and also to support teachers in their preparation for the new Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.
The resource now includes more explicit teaching of letter names as well as sounds. There are new activities to help children learn the corresponding capital letter for each lower case learned. While children are taught to blend any combination of adjacent consonants there is particular attention paid to tricky combinations which children often struggle with. There are more links to reading real texts and more work on reading and making up ‘pseudo’ words. This is to ensure children get the opportunity to apply their phonic knowledge in their reading.
Phonics Planning (2nd Edition) not only includes a spiral-bound book to make photocopying easier, the whole resource is included on an accompanying CD along with free printable resources. All the high frequency words, captions and pictures needed to teach it are included. This is all in Microsoft® Word format so can be easily customised to suit your teaching style, pace and the abilities of your children. All a teacher has to do is print the resources needed to teach each week’s phonics making this resource a valuable, time-saving product for busy teachers.
The resource also includes a Mnemonics CD, which contains PowerPoint® presentations of key words from the High Frequency Words listed in Letters and Sounds. Each highly illustrated and animated slide has a fun mnemonic or other strategy to make the spelling of the word memorable for young minds.
