African Locality Teaching Resource Packs
These authentic West African resources are designed to support teaching and learning in the QCA Geography Schemes of Work units 10 and 22, and to suport crosscurricular topic-based teaching.
These authentic resources based on The Gambia, West Africa have been assembled by Dr. Des Bowden and Pam Copeland of the Geography Department, Newman College of Higher Education, Birmingham, and they have been trialled in Dudley primary schools.
The materials and photographs are based on and have been collected from the Serrekunda locality of The Gambia. Serrekunda is a rapidly expanding urban area in the west of the Gambia. The best fair trade principles have been adhered to in purchasing the artefacts. The materials are designed to support teaching and learning in the QCA Geography Schemes of Work units 10 and 22, and also to suport crosscurricular topic-based teaching.

This photopack contains 18 photographs and two maps (one of The Gambia and one of Serrekunda), which have been compiled to meet the key questions of the QCA Schemes of Work for Units 10 and 22.
The Serrekunda Enquirer

This newspaper, specially written for children, presents factual subject knowledge through a variety of stories, pictures and activities based on the QCA Key Questions. The pack contains 15 copies of the newspaper.

The Gambia Files |
The Gambia Files DVD features video clips, maps and photographs which are easily accessible to teachers and children alike. Linked to the QCA Key Questions, The Gambia Files can be used on individual computers or projected onto a whiteboard. Photographs and maps can be printed for use in lessons.

Some 30 different photographs of The Gambia. These are in addition to the photographs included in the photopacks, but they do include photographs featured in the "Serrekunda Enquirer".
The images capture topics covered in the QCA Scheme of Work for Geography, Units 10 and 22. There are maps of Africa, The Gambia and Serrekunda. They can be used on a monitor for small group work or projected through an interactive whiteboard for the whole class.
