Standardised Literacy Tests - Your Questions Answered

Q: Why have you launched the tests?  To meet a new need from schools for assessment tests without levels. By offering the tests together with our own curriculum resources and tracking service, we’re able to provide a clear, consistent and compelling pedagogy based on five simple attainment standards which enable assessments to be made for year-end ready judgments.

Q: What is different about LCP’s tests?   LCP’s tests provide refined assessments with up to five degrees of precision covering commenced, developing, secure, advanced and deep as used in iTRACK Primary and diagnostic information to inform  pupils’ and future teaching needs. So the tests will ensure that each subject component (e.g. listening comprehension, writing.) will be graded according to the 5 assessment standards used in iTRACK. In addition, we are one of the first to provide a standardised test for writing for the new curriculum.

Q: Which Year groups are covered?  Maths and Literacy Tests are available for Years 1, 2, 3, 4 5 and 6.

Q: Which subjects do the tests cover?  Currently Literacy and Maths.  Categories covered by the Literacy tests are listening comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar and writing.

Q: What about written reading comprehension?   We haven’t included written reading comprehension assessments, at present, as there are already tests available to cover this.  However, written reading comprehension tests may be included at a future date and will be designed specifically to match the without levels model.

Q: How do the new tests fit with iTRACK and your curriculum resources?  Our vision is to provide a portfolio of services bringing together Curriculum teaching resources, assessment tests and a tracking service to offer a consistent approach that provides simplicity, clarity and detail in making assessments.

Q: What is the pedagogy that binds the Curriculum, Assessment and Tracking portfolio together?   At LCP we believe in supporting teachers and inspiring learners through a curriculum that:

  • Is exciting and can be delivered with enthusiasm by teachers
  • Enables differentiation and strong elements of pupil engagement
  • Allows assessments to be made efficiently and in the spirit of the new curriculum (without levels and points)
  • Offers a clear and consistent approach which provides enough detail (without being over engineered) for schools to record measures of attainment and progress and provide the necessary data for reporting to pupils, parents, and all relevant stakeholders.

Q: Why have you focussed on end-of-year tests?   The whole focus of the DfE primary assessment has shifted to focus on whether pupils are year-end ready. Therefore it is natural for us to focus on this key metric.

Q: Are there plans to introduce other progress tests?   Yes, Baseline and Autumn Term Progress Tests are available with Spring Term Progress and Practice Test papers becoming available in Spring 2016.

Q: Who has written the tests?  Our authors are a team of education assessment experts.  The Literacy papers have been written by Mary Crumpler and Colin McCarty, both experienced authors of assessments and standardised tests, who back in the 90’s were members of the teams that developed the national curriculum tests for the government quangos.  Mary Crumpler is a highly experienced and widely published author of literacy tests and resources.

Q: Who has undertaken the standardisation of the tests?  Standardisation has been carried out by Colin McCarty, a former teacher and experienced test developer with specialist knowledge of standardised tests, having developed many diagnostic tests for leading educational institutions and publishers.

Q: How many pupils have been part of the testing and standardisation?  For Literacy, between 900 and 1000 children in each year group.

Q: How are the tests carried out?  For literacy, the Year 1 test (and, from next year, the Year 2 test) is presented orally, and pupils write their answers in a full colour booklet.  In Years 3 to 6 the listening comprehension, vocabulary and spelling questions are presented orally, encouraging the children to listen attentively and improve their working memory.  The punctuation and grammar questions need to be read by the child.  The writing category has to be properly introduced and this is described in the teacher script. The writing will give a standardised score along with standardised scores for all the other elements of literacy.

Q: What is the range of the standardisation?  The range will be between 60 and 140 but based on recent experience and trials the likely range is expected to be between 65 and 135.

Q: How are the test results graded?  Marks are awarded for each question, and summarised by category using a score sheet on the front of the paper.
For Literacy marks are broken down for listening comprehension - obtaining meaning and inference from text plus vocabulary and spelling, written tests of punctuation, grammar and writing. iTRACK has the following - Spoken Language, Reading word, Reading comprehension, Writing, handwriting, written composition, writing vocab grammar & punctuation. The literacy tests provide an excellent match to iTRACK plus with an additional handwriting exercise available if required for writing. The only category not directly informed is ‘reading word’.

Using the score sheet, the marks awarded in each category can be compared with standardised scores, allowing teachers to easily identify areas of strength and areas where pupils require further support, within each subject.

Q: How does the marking system work and the diagnostic value come into play?   The questions are carefully designed with different demand (difficulty) levels, so that marking algorithms will determine which standard has been achieved and which areas of the curriculum have not been answered correctly.

Information about a child’s progress will be obtained from the theoretical algorithms, reference to standardised scores and iTRACK criteria. This combination of methodologies allows teachers make a confident judgement to indicate whether a child is secure, still developing or advanced (etc.) in either Literacy.

Q: How will the test results be transferred to iTRACK Primary?   Initially, results from the paper based tests carried out this term, will be need to be entered manually. Longer term we’re also planning online tests that will feed into iTRACK automatically.
