With education in general and schools in particular coming under ever increasing pressure to cut costs and improve standards, school leadership is seen by many as the differentiator between being an excellent school and the also rans.
The response of the schools' inspectorate is to hold school leaders accountable for success and failure, with school leadership seen as the source of stimulus for high standards.
This one day workshop and INSET Training Programme on CD, Developing School Leadership in the 21st Century, is designed to address these vital needs for the modern day school. Either as a DIY package, or as externally facilitated support, the workshop will enable schools to:
- Define what leadership is in a school context
- Define the characteristics and competencies pertaining to such definitions and how they can be measured
- Enhance school effectiveness and benefit schools undertaking self assessment and/or preparing for inspection.
All too often events of this nature produce vague descriptions of leadership with less than satisfactory outcomes. This workshop overcomes this by enabling you and your staff to determine specific and quantifiable measures of leadership which can be used as part of:
• School planning
• Performance management
• Succession planning
• Development of new talent
• Identification of further professional development needs.
The Developing School Leadership in the 21st Century workshop will benefit all categories of staff. The emphasis and style is one of participation. Staff are guided through the various concepts and practices of leadership and, more importantly, can determine by consensus the elements of leadership that apply to their own school and their own personal circumstances whatever their role.
The workshop examines:
• Characteristics of effective leadership
• Leadership versus management
• Different leadership styles for different occasions
• Ofsted/Estyn definitions and how to evaluate leadership in practice.
It culminates in delegates creating a whole school Leadership Action Plan as well as personal development priorities which can form part of their individual Continuing Professional Development.
