Policies for Primary Schools Managing Headteacher Workload CD
“Headteachers should take their dedicated headship time. If it means spending half a day a week or a day a fortnight at home, they should do it.”
- Mick Brookes, NAHT general secretary

Are you taking your dedicated headship time?

In one article, The Independent stated that 'Under the school workforce agreement headteachers should allow for “dedicated headship time” during their working week – in line with 10% of the school day guaranteed to teachers for marking and preparation – when they can do things like making strategic decisions, devising timetables and assessing staff.'

Yet many headteachers are not taking the dedicated headship time which has been their entitlement since 1 September 2005.

In fact, an extensive survey by the NAHT showed that the workload of school leaders is increasing and that, despite the National Workload Agreement, nearly half of headteachers surveyed still take no dedicated headship time.

Our Managing Dedicated Headship Time CD aims to supports the work/life balance of headteachers by providing a structured approach to organising and managing their dedicated headship time.

In particular, it aims to assist those headteachers who are not taking dedicated headship time to establish it as part of their working week by providing:

  • An awareness raising PowerPoint presentation for governing bodies enabling headteachers to establish their dedicated headship time
  • Four distinct ways of organising dedicated headship time
  • Support material to assist in the planning, organisation and management of dedicated headship time
  • Detailed headteacher presenter notes for the PowerPoint presentation
  • A draft policy agreement for the establishment of dedicated headship time
