Phonics Screening - Help with Pseudo, Non-Words

Make Phonics Fun - example of pseudo words practice sheet

To help teachers deliver fun and effective phonics lessons and follow their guidelines, the Government have produced a Teacher Training Video that explains more about the use of pseudo words in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

The video offers a great insight into acceptable responses from pupils when reading pseudo/non-words.  It takes into consideration accents and offers helpful tips and helps teachers to understand what to expect.

Whilst the Government’s video is a must see, it doesn’t go as far as helping teachers with their day to day phonics teaching.

Make Phonics FunThat's where Make Phonics Fun comes into its own.  We have created Make Phonics Fun especially with the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in mind.

Designed by educational specialists to help teachers engage Year 1 pupils in a fun and imaginative way, it has topic based activities, games, and test cards that include both real and pseudo words.

It is designed to run alongside existing schemes and, to further help teachers and primary schools, the resource wraps its activities around topics themed by the term’s seasons.  As the terms progress through the year, so does the phonic difficulty of the books.

There are three books in the series covering Autumn, Spring and Summer topics. The Summer topics edition is specifically designed to prepare pupils for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in the final school term.

Topics covered in the Summer edition of Make Phonics Fun include:

  • Holiday
  • Pets
  • Transport
  • Minibeasts
  • Fairytales
  • All about me
