From the Stone Age to the Iron Age

This section introduces and supports the teaching of Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

Focuses specifically on the Iron Age and introduces pupils to some of the culture, customs and lifestyle of the Iron Age Celtic peoples.

Introduces pupils to some of the changes that took place during the Iron Age.

Reinforces the concept of chronology, and refers to AD/ACE and BC/BCE.

Encourages pupils to utilise historical enquiry skills and to reflect upon and evaluate archaeological and written evidence.

Provides a wide range of opportunities to develop their spoken language.

Includes Discovering archaeology which introduces the children to the idea of archaeology and the use of different forms of archeological evidence as essential historical sources.

It is helpful if pupils have sequenced events on a timeline, used photographs as sources and have some knowledge of the properties of materials.

The Roman Empire

In this section pupils are introduced to the idea that people from other societies have been coming to Britain for a long time. They consider the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Romans in Britain.

Emphasis on historical enquiry, using artefacts, Roman sites and interpretations of history.

Builds on what pupils have learned about archaeology and the use of different forms of archaeological evidence as essential historical sources.

Reinforces the concept of chronology.

Encourages them to utilise historical enquiry skills and to reflect upon and evaluate archaeological evidence.

Provides a wide range of opportunities for children to develop their spoken language.

Britain’s settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and Scots

This section focuses on the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britian. Pupils build on knowledge of previous peoples and the idea that people from other societies have been coming to Britain for a long time. They consider the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Anglo-Saxons and Scots in Britain.

Emphasis on historical enquiry, using artefacts and interpretations of history.

Builds on what pupils have learned about archaeology and the use of different forms of archaeological evidence as essential historical sources.

Reinforces the concept of chronology.

Encourages pupils to utilise historical enquiry skills and to reflect upon and evaluate archaeological evidence.

The Viking and Anglo-Saxon Struggle

This section covers the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for  the Kingdom of England where pupils continue to develop an understanding of the chronology of British history.  They will consider the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Vikings in Britain.

Emphasis on historical enquiry, using artefacts and interpretations of history.

Builds on what children have learned about archaeology and the previous eras.

Encourages pupils to utilise historical enquiry skills and to reflect upon and evaluate archaeological and other forms of evidence.

Provides a wide range of opportunities for children to develop their spoken language.
