This easy to use resource, Reading Between the Lines, is designed to help with the teaching of comprehension throughout Key Stage 1. It is used to teach children how to ‘read between the lines’ or to use inference and deduction to find information and understand a story.
It can be difficult to teach inference to young children, particularly those who struggle with their reading. This resource uses pictures as a first step, meaning that even poor readers can access the activities.
All the resources are provided so there is very little preparation required. In fact, once you’re familiar with the way the book works you can just pick it up and use it with no planning at all.
There are 32 units, one for nearly every week of the school year. In each unit there is one image and two texts. These can be used as either a whole class activity, for example on an interactive whiteboard, or during guided reading sessions.
Year 1 children look at the pictures and answer questions about what they know is happening and then what they think is happening. They are encouraged to make predictions based on evidence within the pictures.
In Year 2, children read or listen to a short text and learn to talk about what is very obvious and what is inferred. They then get the opportunity to make up a story around the text.
In addition, the Year 2 children have the opportunity to compare the first text with another where everything is made very obvious. They evaluate the impact this has on them as a reader and discuss the language which has been used in the two texts.
The units provide evidence for the following Assessing Pupil Progress Assessment Focuses (AFs):
- AF2: Understand, describe, select or retrieve information, events of ideas from texts and use quotation and reference to the text;
- AF3: Deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts;
- AF5: Explain and comment on writers’ use of language;
- AF6: Indentify and comment on writers’ purposes and viewpoints, and the overall effect of the text on the reader.
The resource also comes with an accompanying CD which has a complete Microsoft® Word version of the resource which can be customised to suit your needs and a full colour copy of all the images used within the booklet.
